About Friends of Jamaica Association
Friends of Jamaica Association (FOJA) is a charitable non-profit organization (501 (c)(3) exemption is pending with the IRS) with the mission of upholding Jamaica's Motto “Out of Many, One People” and in so doing, maintain and support the cultural heritage of Jamaica. We strive to unify the Jamaican community, create awareness, and to represent and protect the integrity of the Jamaican culture.
As an organization, we strive toward uplifting and empowering Jamaicans in Jamaica by providing opportunities and resources through educational and healthcare initiatives. Our vision is to be the first responders to the cultural, educational and social needs of Jamaicans.
Our purpose are:
- To promote and support the Jamaican culture and heritage as well as improving life for Jamaicans.
- To provide community outreach on the island of Jamaica, with a focus on education and health care initiatives.
- To unify the Jamaica Community.
- To form alliances with businesses for the economic welfare of the Jamaican people through social and cultural programs.
- To represent and protect the integrity of the Jamaican culture.
- To be a point of reference that serves to empower and support Jamaicans in becoming acclamated to the U.S. culture.
- To create awareness amongst Jamaicans on political and legislative matters affecting their well being.
History
The organization was formed in July of 2007 by two seperate group of people who share a common goal, to give back to Jamaica through unified local community effort.
Monthly Meetings
Our monthly meeting is on every third Sunday. We try to meet at a central location in order to accommodate our members and visitors. Currently, meetings are primary held at various public libraries in Plano and Richardson, Texas.
